My Lord,

Yedo, Nov.11.1875

Since the receipt of L? Banville's Desp. I.44 of the 24th of Left = 187/3 on the subject of The Bonin Islands, I have endeavoured on several occasions to ascertain from the Foreign Minister, whether the Japanese Government are disposed to hold possession of those islands; but the only reply received was that the question was being considered or investigated. The Formosan affair continued to occupy the attention of the Government throughout 1874, & during that year the Bonin Islands were little thought of.
